Levaquin

What is Levaquin used for?

Levaquin with its generic name, levofloxacin belongs to antibiotics group known as fluoroquinolones as it functions to combat bacteria in the body.
As an effective drug, it fights all bacterial infections related to the bladder, skin, kidneys and sinuses. It is also potent in the treatment of all bacterial infections, which cause pneumonia, and in the treatment of those suffering from anthrax. Apart from the uses listed in the medication guide, levaquin may be found effective in the treatment of other sicknesses that medical practitioners have knowledge of.

Levaquin Uses

There is nothing like adhering strictly to doctor’s prescription in taking any drug and this is not an exception. While following the prescription on the label, do not exceed the stipulated dose nor reduce the dose for personal reasons.
The drug, levaquin 500 mg should be taken at the given time with a glass of water and should be followed with extra water intake during the day while on this medication. There is no hard and fast rule about using it before or after meal as you can take it with and without food.
The liquid form of this drug should be taken on an empty stomach about one hour before meals and two hours after meals. All medications should be taken with the prescribed measuring spoon and cup. You must check content after purchase to ensure measuring devices are included while you must not forget to ask the right measurement to avoid overdose.
As common to all medications, your health might improve drastically after few days of taking the medication but you must continue to the stipulated number of days as inconsistency can lead to rebuilding of infection. Levaquin has not been effective in the treatment of viral infections like flu and common cold.
All medications should be stored away at room temperature from heat, sunlight and moisture.

Levaquin Dosing

Should there be any case of overdose, you must seek medical help immediately. Extra medication should not be taken for missed dose but should be taken at the point of remembrance. Since you are unique, you are not expected to share your levaquin dosage with another person either as adult or child. Refer every case to your doctor who will look into the situation surrounding the person and give appropriate prescription.
It also wrong to assume a previously prescribed medication can be applied in every new situation. That is tantamount to self medication, which can lead to overdose or wrong medication.

Side Effects Of Levaquin

If you are under this medication, there is the possibility of having wrong medical test result. This is why it is advisable to let your doctor know you are under a particular medication, should there be sudden arrangement for laboratory test.
Other symptoms of side effects of levaquin include: swelling/tearing of tendon within the Achilles’ heel, sudden pain, tenderness, stiffness of joints, swelling and bruising. If you experience any of these, you must discontinue the drug and contact your doctor for assistance immediately before it becomes too late. The drug can also affect your alertness and thinking reaction and so, user should not operate any form of heavy machine or drive.
For joint pain, you can rest the leg before medical intervention is sought. Since most antibiotics cause diarrhea, you must let your doctor know should it occur in the course of taking this treatment. You must not take any anti diarrhea medicine.

Possible Precautions

For those having health history of myasthenia gravis or muscle disorder, they may not be able to use levaquin and their doctor should be carried along. If you are above 60 years, you are more likely to be prone to the side effect of swollen tendon. Your right age should be properly made known to your doctor. If you have previously undergone lung, kidney and heart transplant, you may be excused from taking this drug.
If you are allergic to levofloxacin or other levaquin coverage with which it is made, you should avoid taking this drug. Other things to watch for are: family history of QT syndrome, any joint problem, bone, liver or kidney problem, brain/head injury, allergy to any antibiotic, diabetes, use of blood thinner and low level of potassium.

Drug Interaction

There are some drugs that can render levaquin ineffective. So, such should be avoided during the period of drug administration. They include antacids having aluminum or magnesium, all chewable tablets, all vitamin supplements having zinc, magnesium, iron and aluminum.
Also, theophylline, water pills, heart related medication, medications for mental and depression control, aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs can work contrary to this drug. levaquin and alcohol are also contrary to each other.
Since levaquin can make you prone to sunburn, avoid direct exposure to tanning beds and sunlight. For outdoors, you can use sunscreen and other protective clothing.
